SL 500 Twin Turbo 6.0
This 1998 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 RENNtech has undergone a full restoration, blending its timeless design with cutting-edge performance and modern comforts.
On the exterior, the roadster wears a custom metallic dark grey finish, complemented by a factory AMG aero package and bespoke RENNtech wheels. Inside, the transformation goes far beyond appearance. The original 5.0L V8 was bored to 100 mm and stroked to 98.4 mm, increasing displacement to 6.0 liters. To harness this new power, a Bosch Engine Management System was integrated with a handmade wiring harness, requiring ground-up programming of ignition and fuel systems.
RENNtech’s fabricators hand-built a custom intake manifold, along with all piping and hoses, to accommodate dual Borg Warner turbos. Over 400 hours of fabrication went into crafting the exhaust, intake, and a water-to-air intercooling system with a centrally mounted heat exchanger, achieving a seamless factory fit.
The result: 415 HP and 400 lb-ft of torque at the wheels, translating to 501 HP and 482 lb-ft at the crank—numbers that rival today’s modern roadsters.
To manage this extreme performance, both chassis and driveline were reinforced. The convertible’s flexible frame was stiffened for sharper handling, a limited-slip differential was added for improved traction, and the transmission was strengthened to handle the surge in power. An adjustable sport suspension allows fine-tuning of ride height and damping in any environment, while a custom-engineered ceramic brake package provides the stopping force required to match its speed.
This SL 500 is more than a restoration—it’s a reimagined classic, engineered to perform at the highest level without losing its original spirit.
